Southern Pacific Railroad photographs, 1880-1890.

Contains prints of photographs taken by Charles B. Turrill of scenes along the Southern Pacific Railroad's Sunset Route through West Texas. Specific points include: El Paso, Marfa, Paisano Pass, Toronto Canyon, and Painted Cave. Views of the Rio Grande include several views from the Rio Pecos. Some images are of railroad depots, bridges, or other structures. There are photographs of a captive black bear and a monkey named "Emma."

The Southern Pacific Railroad was founded in 1865 and was purchased in 1869 by Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Mark Hopkins, better known as the Big Four.
